Belmonte earns D2Football.com award

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Senior kicker/punter Rockne Belmonte, of the Northern Michigan University football team, added to his accolades this week by being named D2Football.com’s Special Teams Player of the Week.

He was also named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Week. Belmonte hit four field goals in a 33-28 win over Saginaw Valley. He hit from 36, 46, 49, and 55 yards, only missing from 51 yards.

He now owns the NMU record for field goals in a career with 42. He also punted seven times for a 32 yard average, including a season-high 48-yarder.

The Wildcats wrap up the regular season on Saturday, hosting Ferris State at 1 p.m. at the Superior Dome.

Belmonte along with 11 other seniors will be honored at a luncheon at the University Center on Friday and before the game. Cost of the luncheon is $10 for each Wildcat fan.
