Man arrested after Houghton Co. break-in

A 22-year old Washington man is in custody after an alleged attempted break in of a Calumet store and then leading law enforcement on a chase.

The Houghton County Sheriff’s Department says deputies responded to a call yesterday to help Calumet Police investigate an attempted Breaking and Entering at the Harter’s Party Store on Pine Street.

Calumet Police reported that various items had been stolen…including a firearm, lottery tickets, cigarettes, alcohol, and an undetermined amount of cash.

While attempting to locate the suspect…information was turned over to the deputies from a concerned citizen about a silver minivan driving erratically in the area of North Tamarack Road in Calumet Township.

Based off the information provided…the deputies believed the minivan was connected to the incident at Harter’s Party Store.

While searching the area…Deputies located the minivan and tried to stop it but a chase ensure.  The driver eventually stopped at the intersection of North Tamarack and M-203 in Calumet Township.

Deputies learned the minivan had been taken from a nearby business.

The suspect was arrested for fleeing and eluding…unlawfully driving away a motor vehicle…and operating while intoxicated.

The incident remains under investigation.
