Police warn of telephone and Internet scams

The Escanaba Public Safety is warning people to be aware of telephone and Internet scams. Police say that due to the recent disaster on the East Coast and the upcoming holiday season, scams may start to circulate again.

They say to never give out personal information over the phone or Internet unless you are 100% sure of the source. Most financial institutions would not be asking for account information.

Many scams ask that you send thousands of dollars to help a loved one who maybe stranded or in trouble outside of the United States. If this happens to you -remember to ask the person calling to provide you with a business number, address, and a supervisor’s name so local law enforcement can verify the story.

Asking for information may prevent these types of scams and stop calls from individuals trying to scam you.
