Hubbard for State Representative

As Election Day approaches, many people in the central U.P. have their eye on the 109th District State Representative race.

Marquette Democrat Steve Lindberg is finishing his third term.

He can’t run for the seat again because of term limits.

The Republican nominee to succeed him lives in Alger County.

Jack Hubbard is a Marquette native but has lived in Grand Marais for many years.

He’s a longtime logger and small business owner.

Hubbard has served as Burt Township Supervisor since 2006.

He says whoever wins needs to be able to work with people on either side of the aisle politically.

Hubbard says with 109 other members of the Michigan House, whoever wins the 109th District seat will have to convince a great many people that whatever projects people in the central U.P. would like are just as worthy as projects aimed at the Lower Peninsula.

The Grand Marais harbor breakwall rebuild project led him to enter the race.

The community had wanted the project for decades.

It required co–operation between the U.P., Lansing, Washington and even Reader’s Digest magazine.

Hubbard says when other residents ask him about why Upper Peninsula communities don’t see the re-investment from the state that much of the Lower Peninsula does, he tells them the U.P. needs people in Lansing that are fighting harder.

Hubbard has also served as Burt Township’s fire chief, as a trustee on the township board and as a member of the township Planning Commission.
