MSP Report Internet-Related Scam

Michigan State Police from the Gladstone Post want people to be aware of a new type of scam reaching the area.

They say scammers are contacting residents who are trying to sell items on the Internet.

The scammers are sending bogus checks as payment for more money than the asking price.

The seller is told to cash or deposit the check, take the money they’re owed and send the remaining balance to another account.

The bogus check bounces after the fact and the seller is responsible for the forwarded money.

State Police suggest a couple of things.

They recommend not responding to any unsolicited e–mails from unknown senders.

They say any unfamiliar check should be verified with bank personnel before it’s cashed or deposited, and they’re asking residents to report any suspicious contacts to law enforcement.
