NMU Soccer wins first home game

MARQUETTE, Mich. The Northern Michigan University soccer team received its first home victory on Sunday (Sept. 30) with a 3-0 shutout over the University of Findlay. The Wildcats are now 3-6 overall and 2-3 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Today we were determined to show who we are, said NMU coach Matt Granstrand. Gaining a little more success is allowing us to believe in ourselves a little more.
NMUs first goal came on a pass from the right side from sophomore Ashley Katers to senior Amelia Johnson at 33:29. Johnsons goal was her second of the weekend after scoring on Friday night against Tiffin.
The next two NMU goals were scored by sophomore Taylor Smith, earning her first goals of her career. Smiths first goal came on a rebound after a long shot from freshman Gabriella Garza that hit the crossbar. Smiths initial shot was saved but she found the back of the net on the rebound. In the 75th minute, her second goal came off of a cross pass from freshman Tiffany Trembley inside the box.
Redshirt freshman Shelby Conard recorded her third win of the season as goalkeeper, and her second shutout. Her first shutout was at Minnesota-Crookston on Sept. 3 when the Cats won 2-0. Conard ended Sundays game with six saves.
The Oilers goalkeeper, Kelsea Corns, had three saves for the game. Findlay (2-5-1, 2-2-2 GLIAC) had just one more shot on the afternoon with 11, while NMU had 10.
The Cats will travel to lower Michigan next weekend for a pair of games against Northwood on Friday (Oct. 5) and Saginaw Valley on Sunday (Oct. 7)
