Safe Routes to School Money for Munising

Mather Elementary School in Munising is receiving a federal Safe Routes to School grant.

The goal is to encourage more students to walk and bicycle safely to school.

The federal funding enables schools to make infrastructure improvements and offer educational activities, such as the Walking School Bus program.

In partnership with the city of Munising, Mather Elementary will install sidewalks and crosswalks on M-28 and Cherry and Jewell streets, along with upgraded signs and pavement markings at the intersections of Elm Avenue and Jewell Street, and Elm Avenue and Chocolay Street.

The school also will implement a walking school bus program, weekly walk/bike to school days, a park-and-walk program, a student safety patrol, and a program for adult volunteers. The project budget is $119,757.

MDOT is administering the program for schools in Michigan that receive the money.
