NMU, Tech to clash Saturday in soccer

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University soccer team returns home for a three-game home stand after playing the last five on the road. The Wildcats take on Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and U.P. rival Michigan Tech on Saturday (Sept. 22) at 11 a.m. from the NMU Soccer Field.
NMU split a pair of games on the road last weekend in Ohio to open conference play. Notre Dame College defeated the ‘Cats 2-0 on Friday and Northern bounced back with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Lake Erie College on Sunday.
Michigan Tech is 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the GLIAC. The Huskies defeated Notre Dame and Lake Erie last weekend. MTU has three shutout wins and are led in scoring by Lindsey Van Rooy with four goals. Katie Boardman has three goals for Tech and goalkeeper Jenna Phelps has 25 saves and a 75.8 save percentage.
Sophomore Tevun Sellers and freshmen Hailey Beyrand, Tiffany Trembley and Gabriella Garza each have one goal for the ‘Cats. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Shelby Conard has 27 saves and a 77.1 save percentage.
Saturday’s game will be the fourth matchup between the two schools. NMU leads the series 2-1 and are 1-0 in Marquette. Northern received its first loss to Tech earlier this season as the Huskies won 2-0 on Sept. 10 from Houghton.
