Rio Tinto Community Scorecard
Rio Tinto is allowing Marquette County residents to grade it on how well it’s meeting the goals that the community has for it regarding the Eagle Mine and the Humboldt mill.
Rio Tinto is letting people who attend public forums grade the company.
Residents in Humboldt Township got that chance tonight.
The company won high marks on its commitment to local hiring and environmental stewardship.
Humboldt Township Supervisor Joe Derocha says he’s grateful that Rio Tinto has spent a great deal of money to clean up contaminated soil left behind from the Humboldt Mine’s previous life.
However, Derocha feels Rio Tinto needs to make itself more visible in the actual communities where its operations are, like Humboldt and Michigamme.
He says that has not been a problem elsewhere in the county, and he’d like the company to be more active in the community on the west end of the county.
There are two more sessions within the next week or so to let Rio Tinto know what you think.
Rio Tinto is hosting one in Marquette next Monday night at the Ramada Inn, and then there’s one in L’Anse at the American Legion Hall.
Both forums start at 6 pm on their respective nights.
