UPDATE: L'Anse water main break

The water main break in L’Anse has been repaired and crews have returned water pressure to the system.

However the boil water advisory will remain in affect for at least another 24 hours, officials are awaiting the results of the bacteria test, and expect to have those results later in the evening.

A major water main break has left most water customers in L’Anse high and dry.

Village manager Bob LaFave says the break happened today as crews were replacing a fire hydrant near Waterfront Park. Some areas of town still have a small amount of water pressure.

L’Anse Public Schools and Sacred Heart School have both cancelled classes for tomorrow. There’s no estimate of when full water pressure might be restored.

Because of potential contamination, a boil water advisory is in place for the entire L’Anse water system. Effective immediately, any water dram from the system for drinking or cooling should be boiled for at least five minutes before consumption.

Consumers may wish to use bottled water for such purposes. Village officials say tap water will be safe for other uses, like showering and washing clothes.

The boil water advisory will remain in effect for at least 24 hours after the system is repaired and recharged, until testing shows no contamination.
