E.coli closes South Beach in Marquette for the season

As a result of elevated levels of bacteria at South Beach in Marquette, the beach will be closed for the rest of the season.  City of Marquette officials say no recreational swimming will be permitted at the beach.

E. Coli levels at the beach have been above the safe level of 300 multiple times this summer. The last recording of hazardous E. Coli levels at the beach was Wednesday night. Wastewater treatment plant officials say that number was 341.

Officials say the reoccurring problem of E. Coli at the beach is due to wildlife and the large number of seagulls and geese that stay at the beach.

All other beaches in the city of Marquette will remain open.
