Preventing accidents was the order of the day in Marquette County.
The Marquette County Road Commission worked throughout the warm sunny day on a project near the city limits of Marquette on M–553. The road has seen a number of accidents in recent years.
Several have involved fatalities. The issue at hand is the wash–out from the roadside onto the road itself. Crews are removing sand, soil and gravel from below and behind the guard rails and removing the berms to keep the roadway clean.
The next phase of the project will involve filling in areas of the roadway that have been compromised or washed out. The work will continue for the next couple of days – signage will be posted in the work areas alerting motorists to use caution.
