The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal motor vehicle and bicycle accident that occurred in Rudyard over the weekend.
Deputies say that a vehicle traveling south on Mackinac Trail driven by Mildred Grace Forgave of Rudyard observed two bicycle, one on each side of the roadway going in the same direction.
She slowed down and drove on the center line to make a safe passage between them when suddenly one of the cyclists, 87 year-old Max Martin Mackie attempted to cross the roadway without looking, resulting in and accident.
Mackie struck the windshield upon impact and was transported to War Memorial Hospital where he died from multiple injuries.
The driver of the vehicle and the passenger received minor injuries and both were transported by private vehicle to War Memorial for treatment.
Deputies say that no citations were issued and alcohol was not involved. The accident remains under investigation.
