A Houghton County man is waiting to be arraigned on possible drunk driving charges after he crashed his vehicle and escaped before it burst into flames.

The accident happened on Wednesday around 6:30 p.m. on the Number 4 Road near Kearsarge in Calumet Township.

Michigan State Police from the Calumet Post said a 60-year old man from Kearsarge failed to make the turn on a corner and ran off the road.

The vehicle turned onto its side and then caught fire but the driver got out before it became fully engulfed.

When troopers arrived, they learned the driver had been drinking and he was first taken to Aspirus Keweenaw for minor injuries then lodged in the Houghton County Jail.

His name is being withheld until his arraignment.
