Update on Fire in Sands Township

It’s a smoky evening for residents of a Marquette County neighborhood.

What was first thought to be a grass fire turned out to be a fire in a heavily wooded area of Sands Township. The fire was only about a thousand feet behind the homes in the Stone Gate Subdivision. About 3.7 acres burned in the fire.

A likely ignition point was a camp fire. Fire crews and police cordoned off one area of the fire scene. They found evidence of a camp site and what appeared to be fuel cans. A man’s coat was also found in the area where the fire may have started. Fighting fires in rural areas means water has to be trucked in.

The fire is still under investigation. The Department of Natural Resources, Sands Township Fire Department, and The Marquette County Sheriff’s Department all responded to the fire.
