Benishek Meets U.P. Honor Flight WWII Veterans
WASHINGTON, DC: First District Congressman Dr. Dan Benishek greeted Upper Michigan World War II veterans in Washington, D.C. as part of the U.P. Honor Flight.
In a statement, Benishek said, “It was a great privilege to get to meet with World War II veterans from Northern Michigan in Washington this morning. From Omaha Beach to Iwo Jima, these brave men fought to rid the world of tyranny and give freedom to people in distant countries they had never even met.
Sadly, we are losing the veterans of this great war at an alarming rate. The organizers of the Honor Flight Network should be deservedly proud of their efforts to give back to our nation’s heroes who sacrificed so much for our liberty.
Just as they did all over the country, these selfless individuals from Northern Michigan answered the call when their country needed them the most, and it was an honor to be with them when they arrived at the World War II Memorial.”
79 World War II veterans are visiting Washington, D.C., as a free, one-day trip designed to honor and show appreciation for their service to the United States. They represent all branches of the military and are from several areas of Upper Michigan and Wisconsin.
Mission II, the second edition of the U.P. Honor Flight, left Escanaba this morning and will return to the Delta County Airport at 9 p.m. to a Hero’s Welcome Home event. The public is invited to attend.
