USOEC Wreslers place at National Championships

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Two U.S. Olympic Education Center freestyle wrestlers
placed in the top four at the 2012 University National Championships last
weekend ( March 24-25) in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Northern Michigan University sophomore Melissa Apodaca (Chugiak, Alaska) was second in the 63 kilogram weight class with a tournament record of 5-1. Apodace pinned Mayleen Soto in the second period and followed up with two wins against April Ritts, 5-0, 3-0 and Stephanie Geltmacher 3-2, 1-0, which vaulted her into the gold-medal match against Trinity Plessigner. There, Apodaca lost 3-1, 6-0.
For the true second-place match Apodaca pinned Alli Ragan in the first period.

Sophomore Gabrielle Lord-Klein (Stevens Point, Wis.) finished fourth in the 67 kg weight class, getting pinned by Jennifer Page in the second period. Klein won her first two matches 5-0, 2-0 and 2-1, 3-0 against Shelia McCabe and Lorrie Ramos, respectively. Klein lost to the tournament winner Adeline Gray with a pin, but battled back against Danielle Curlis, winning 1-0, 2-0 to earn her spot versus Page in the third-place match.
