Wolf Population on Isle Royal

Nearly all of the wolves on Isle Royale are gone.

In a recently released report from researchers at Michigan Tech, the number of wolves at Isle Royale National Park has dipped to nine—the lowest since the university’s wolf-moose predator-prey study began 54 years ago.

The question on whether to intervene is a complex one as experts wrestle with the ethics and environmental viewpoints.

According to the article released in George Wright Forum, measures to save the wolves could include reintroducing wolves when all the current wolves are extinct, introducing new female wolves, or adding new wolves into the current population.

If nothing is done, the moose population will flourish for a time before the food on the island is stripped and they eventually starve.
