Cliffs Gets Safety Award

Cliffs Natural Resources, Michigan Operations and the Cliffs Technology Group, recently received awards for their continued commitment to safety.  The awards were presented during a recent visit from Donald Gallagher, Cliffs’ executive vice president and president-global commercial and P. Kelly Tompkins, Cliffs’ executive vice president-legal, government affairs, sustainability and chief legal officer.

The Empire mine and plant operations received the 2011 Exemplary Safety Performance Award.  This achievement is due to employees following safe production standards set by the Cliffs organization and reducing reportable incidents and lost-time injuries.

“This award for Empire means a great deal to our employees and is a testament to the diligent work put forth by all,” said James Kochevar, interim general manager, Michigan Operations for Cliffs.  “Cliffs has high expectations when it comes to safety and we’re honored to be recognized for meeting those standards.”

Also receiving the Exemplary Safety Performance Award for 2011 was Cliffs Technology Group (CTG).  CTG was recognized for completing 34 years and a total of 3.3 million work hours without a lost-time incident.   This level of safety performance is achieved by committing to do the job safely every time and in all types of conditions.

“We’re very proud to receive this award,” said Marc Johnson, general manager technical services. “It takes a strong level of commitment to reach this kind of accomplishment and this award is a true reflection of our employees.”
