Plea Agreement in Attempted ATM Theft

A Houghton County man could serve up to five years in prison from trying to break into an ATM.

20-year-old Gordon Lewis of Dollar Bay pled no contest to attempted safe breaking in a plea agreement reached earlier this week.

Lewis also pled no contest to the two year misdemeanor of attempted larceny.

In exchange for the plea, the prosecution dropped the felony charge of safebreaking—which carries a possible life sentence—and two other four year felonies…larceny in a building and possession of a financial transaction device.

The charges stem from an incident last October when Lewis and 18-year-old Paden Rothenberger of Atlantic Mine tried to break into an ATM machine at the Miner’s State Bank in South Range.

Rothenberger pled guilty in January to charges related to the same incident.  He is not expected to receive any jail time as a result of a plea agreement.

Lewis is scheduled to be sentenced on April 16th.
