Digital Mammography at Munising Memorial
Another U.P. hospital is upgrading its breast cancer treatment technology.
Munising Memorial Hospital has analog mammography equipment, and it doesn’t have an in–house radiologist to interpret the filmed breast images.
The films have to be sent away.
A radiographer at Munising Memorial, Jessie Webster, says the hospital just received a federal grant for nearly $93,000 to address that situation.
The federal grant comes from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Distance Learning and Telemedicine Program.
The money will help pay for brand-new digital mammography equipment, which will cost just over $230,000.
Some of the remaining funds will come from the hospital’s next budget, and the hospital has also been raising money.
Munising Memorial officials are planning to have the new machine up and running in October.
