NMU's Lyons earns GLIAC North Division honor

MARQUETTE, Mich. – For the first time this season, a Northern Michigan women’s basketball player has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division “Player of the Week.” Senior guard Chelsea Lyons (Coon Rapids, Minn.) was honored after leading the ‘Cats to a two-game conference sweep last week.

Lyons led the ‘Cats to a 2-0 record last week with thrilling wins over Wayne State (70-69) and Findlay (79-76). Lyons averaged 26.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and shot 52.9 percent from the field in the two wins over the south division opponents. The senior recorded 25 points, nine rebounds and five assists against Wayne State and recorded 28 points, six rebounds, four assists, and shot 73.3% from the field in the win over Findlay. Lyons is averaging 22 points per game over the last seven games and currently ranks seventh in the conference in points per game with 15.4, and steals per game with 2.1.

The ‘Cats (10-11, 6-8 GLIAC) host Upper Peninsula rival Lake Superior State this week on Feb. 4.
