Poetry Out Loud in Marquette

Local high school students show off their love of poetry, and their public speaking skill, by taking to the stage.

Poetry Out Loud is a national contest in which high school students memorize and recite poems of their choice.

Professors and poets from Northern Michigan University judged how Marquette Senior High School students did.

Emma Gregory, a junior, was the winner from among fourteen Marquette students.

She moves on to the Michigan championship at Saginaw Valley State University next month.

The state winner goes to Washington, DC in May for the national championship.

$50,000 in scholarships and school stipends will be up for grabs there.

Kelly Sprouse, another junior, finished second, and sophomore David Bashaw came in third.
