Freezin' 4 Reasons

The Ishpeming St. Vincent de Paul Society conference and St. Joseph’s Church in Ishpeming are trying to help U.P. residents stay warm in the second half of the winter.

They’re holding an event Saturday called Freezin’ 4 Reasons.

Young people, seventh grade and up, will set up makeshift shelters outside the church and stay there for hours.

Marquette St. Vincent de Paul conference executive director Laurie Schmit says the shelter experience will serve as a reminder that quite a few people don’t have any choice about whether or not they freeze.

Every hour, the young people will spend 15 minutes inside the church to stay warm.

The money they raise from donations will go to St. Vinny’s heating assistance program.

It’s open to all young people who might like to camp out, not just to kids from within St. Joseph’s Parish.

Freezin’ 4 Reasons takes place outside the church from 4 to 10 pm Saturday.

Schmit says you can call the church or the Ishpeming St. Vinny’s office for more information.
