A winter storm warning has been issued for much of the Upper Peninsula.

Significant lake effect snow and widespread blowing and

drifting snow late tonight through Monday…

Expect snow to overspread Western and

Central upper Michigan. The snow may possibly be mixed with rain late

tonight through mid morning Sunday over South Central Upper Michigan.

As the low shifts to the East…this precipitation will transition to

lake enhanced snow showers…which will be heavy at times on New

Years day into Monday. Northwest wind gusts up to 40 to 60 mph near

Lake Superior will also cause extensive blowing snow in open areas.

Blizzard conditions are possible on New Years day and Monday over

Northwest Upper Michigan and East of Marquette. As the low moves

farther to the East by late Monday…the snow showers and wind will

gradually subside.

Expect snow to arrive late tonight and continue into Sunday

morning…with 2 to 4 inches of accumulation expected by noon

Sunday. The snow will transition to heavy lake effect snow showers

over much of Baraga county and the Huron mountains in Marquette

County on Sunday afternoon and continue through Monday afternoon.

lighter lake effect snow showers will fall in Marquette County

South and east of Ishpeming.

* Northwest wind gusts of 30 to 45 mph new years day into

Monday will cause extensive blowing and drifting of snow and

localized whiteout conditions.

* For areas west of Ishpeming and across most of Baraga

County…expect storm total snowfall of a foot or more.

Although lesser amounts of snow will fall across the

Southeast half of Marquette County…blowing and drifting

snow will result in reduced visibilities there as well.

* Travel will be very difficult New Years day and Monday due to

the heavy snow and blowing and drifting snow.

* Power outages are also possible due to the high winds.

* A winter storm warning for heavy snow and blowing snow means

severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring.

Significant amounts of snow…along with widespread blowing

snow…are forecast that will make travel dangerous.
