As we head into the winter months, it’s as important as ever to practice good fire safety — especially around the holidays, when house fires are more likely.

Marquette Fire Department fire inspector Paul Enrietti says something as simple as a smoke detector could save your life.
He says it’s a good idea to sleep with your bedroom door closed because the door is an extra layer of protection in case of a fire anywhere else in the house.
Space heaters are also common practice during the winter months, but they can be a hazard if not used properly.
Enrietti says that space heaters need space — about three feet of clearance in any direction on the floor, and three feet of space directly above.
Many newer space heaters have an emergency kill switch that shuts the heater off if and when it’s knocked over.
