There’s new information on the accidental shooting in Marquette County from the first day of firearm deer season.
The Sheriff’s Department says 15–year–old Ashley Mattson of Gwinn shot herself in the foot last Tuesday morning.
She and her father, 55–year–old James Mattson of Gwinn, were hunting in Michigamme Township at the time.
Ashley Mattson had shot a deer near the Kennecott Eagle Mine, and the deer ran off.
While she followed the blood trail, she placed a second round of ammunition in her gun’s chamber.
But she didn’t engage the safety and the gun went off.
She was taken to Marquette General for treatment.
There’s no word from the hospital on her condition.
