Plans are in motion to build a brand new supermarket on US 41 in Osceola Township. The Houghton County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority approved its first brownfield plan for a Louie’s Super Foods to be built on a site where an old gas station and car wash now sits.

Developer Jeffrey Hawkins summarized what the project would bring to the area: the new facility will employ about 50 people—roughly doubling the number working at Louie’s Super Foods in Calumet. Additional jobs could be created through other retail businesses at the site such as a pharmacy and a bank inside the store.

The total investment of the project will be 3 to 4 million dollars with a loan-grant being requested from the Department of Environmental Quality. Construction on the site is projected to begin next year.
