Possible Connection Between Keweenaw Bank Robberies

State Police from the Calumet Post have two made two arrests in the attempted break–in at a bank ATM two weeks ago.

It happened at the Miners State Bank in south range in the early morning hours.

ABC 10 News Now Keweenaw Bureau reporter Rick Allen has the story of how one of the suspects is connected to another bank robbery incident.

An Atlantic Mine teenager is already charged with trying to rob a bank , but it appears this wasn’t his first time.

Officials say 18–year–old Paden Rothenberger was arrested, along with another unidentified suspect, for the attempted ATM break–in in South Range.

The other suspect was a 20–year–old male from Dollar Bay.

Surveillance video footage showed the two suspects trying to open the ATM with a cordless drill.

Bond for Rothenberger and the second suspect was set at $25,000.

Arraignment is scheduled for Wednesday morning.

Rothenberger was arraigned in 97th District Court yesterday for the attempted robbery of the Superior National Bank in Chassell over the weekend.

He’s a senior at Jeffers High School in Painesdale.

Police say he and a 15–year–old boy tried to enter the bank wearing masks and carrying toy guns, but the lobby doors were locked.

Only the drive-through window was open at the time.

The suspects were seen heading into some wetlands behind the bank.

They were arrested when they returned to the bank to try and enter a second time.

A 16–year–old girl was arrested Sunday in connection with the crime. Both minors were sent to a juvenile holding center in St. Ignace.

Rothenberger was charged with one count of attempted bank robbery and one count of attempted armed robbery.

Both charges are felonies and carry up to five years in prison if convicted.
