Hancock Battles Cigarette Butts

Downtown Houghton is not an ashtray.

That’s the message the City Council wants to get out to the people to get them to stop throwing cigarette butts out on the streets. The butts are not biodegradable and end up in the wastewater system.

Police Chief John Donnelly said there are citations that can be issued for littering…and those range from $50 to 125 and possibly more.

However, the Council prefers to educate the public in hopes that awareness will help with the problem. A possible poster campaign could be in the works.
