Ahmeek Post Office Woes

The Ahmeek Post Office is one of 24 branches in the U.P. slated to be closed. A group of about 70 citizens packed the Village Hall to voice their opinion Wednesday evening.

The owner of the Sand Hills Lighthouse Inn Mary Matthews said she just had 8,000 brochures made with her mailing address on them—an address she now fears will be useless.

American Postal Workers Union President Tony Carobine said the solution is right before Congress. He says if the legislature would pass a bill allowing the Post Office to use money prepaid for retirement benefits, then there would not be a crisis. Carobine stressed that the solution is not the elimination of local postal services.

Congressman Dan Benishek took a lot of fire from the residents for not coming out in support of the bill. Benishek’s representative Stephanie Johnson explained that he is still deciding what is the best course of action.
