M-94 Bridge Replacement

It’ll be a little more difficult to get to the U.P.’s largest airport for the next few weeks due to construction near Sawyer International Airport.

A construction project on the m–94 bridge, just east of m–553, started today.

Crews are replacing portions of the bridge, which runs directly above the Canadian National Railway line.

MDOT engineer Andy Sikkema says they’ve known for quite some time the bridge needed work — weight restrictions have been in place on it since January.

The work should wrap up around September 30th.

Traffic will be diverted to M–553, Kelly Johnson Drive and M–94.

MDOT says if you’re driving to or from the airport, you should allow for some extra time during the approximately 6-week project.
