People Protest Against Kennecot Project

A NEW EFFORT IS UNDERWAY IN THE ANTI–MINE PROTESTS AGAINST THE KENNECOTT PROJECT.

SCOTT RUTHERFORD IS A MEMBER OF ‘WAVE.’

THAT STANDS FOR WATER ACTION VITAL EARTH.

RUTHERFORD STARTED HIS WATER–ONLY FAST ON JULY 9 TH TO PROTEST THE EAGLE MINE.

HE’S CALLING FOR THE DEVELOPMENT TO STOP .

HE’S WORKING WITH OTHER LOCAL RESIDENTS OPPOSED TO THE MINING OPERATION.

THEY SAY IT IS CREATING ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES.

SCOTT RUTHERFORD IS A 77 YEAR OLD RESIDENT OF HANCOCK AND NAVY VETERAN.

HE SAYS HE WANTS THE GOVERNOR TO STEP IN TO STOP THE MINING OPERATION.

HE’S HOLDING VIGILS AT BOTH THE EAGLE MINE ENTRANCES AND AT THE FEDERAL COURTHOUSE IN MARQUETTE.

KENNECOTT IS WORKING ON A SIX ACRE NICKEL AND COPPER MINING OPERATION IN MICHIGAMME TOWNSHIP, ABOUT 25 MILES NORTHWEST OF MARQUETTE.

THE COMPANY WILL ACCESS THE NICKEL AND COPPER DEPOSITS THROUGH DEVELOPMENT OF AN UNDERGROUND MINE, USING A TOTAL OF THAN 120 ACRES.

KENNECOTT OFFICIALS SAY THIS RELATIVELY SMALL FOOTPRINT MEANS LESS IMPACT TO THE ENVIRONMENT AND COMMUNITY.
