Changes to Marquette City Charter?

Changes may be coming to the document that governs how the City of Marquette operates.

At its last meeting, the Marquette City Commission started a process to amend the city’s charter.

It approved spending just under $5,000 for a comprehensive legal review of the charter.

And it formed a charter study group of city residents.

The study group will have 9 members.

It’ll serve as an advisory group to the city commission to let them know whether or not the charter should be changed.

Anyone registered to vote in the city can apply through the city manager’s office.

The city charter has been in place since 1952.

Marquette City Clerk Dave Bleau says it has many outdated provisions and several sections that conflict with current state and federal law.
