Relay for Life
Where there’s a will there’s a way, and residents of the U.P. are showing just how strong their will is in the fight against cancer.
The American Cancer Society 2011 Relay for Life kicked off today at Ishpeming’s Al Quaal Recreation Area.
It is the world’s largest movement to end the disease.
Marquette County is just one of 5,000 communities in the United States that participate in Relay for Life each year, along with even more communities in 20 other countries.
Teams of people camp out, taking turns walking or running around a track.
A representative from each team must be on the track at all times.
Carl Fulsher says because cancer never sleeps, neither do the participants — the relay lasts for 24 hours.
Relay for Life events vary slightly from place to place, but one thing that remains the same is a three-pronged approach: celebrate, remember and fight back.
And tonight’s participants were definitely celebrating.
Activities and entertainment continue until noon tomorrow, when they wrap up with closing ceremonies.
And there’ll be at least one change next year.
The event moves to Saturday and Sunday so even more people will be able to participate.
