Floor Collapse at J.C. Penney Building

A problem comes up during the demolition of a downtown Ishpeming building.

The former J.C. Penney building at Main Street and Cleveland Avenue has been empty for years.

T & G United Construction is handling the demolition.

The excavator doing the job collapsed through the first floor this afternoon, settling in the basement.

It looked like a scary situation, but no one was hurt.

The former store building is about 60 years old.

The Ishpeming Downtown Development Authority bought the Penney’s building last fall.

It had become an eyesore and a health hazard because of mold, water damage and asbestos.
