NMU Swimmers Perform Well at Calvin Invite

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan swimming and diving team finished sixth out of nine schools at the Calvin Winter Invitational over the weekend. The meet was a three day event that started on Thursday. The ‘Cats headed home early before Saturday’s finals got started.

“We swam and dove great!” Head coach Heidi Voigt said. “We were the only team there that had finals this week so we left early so the kids could prepare for their exams.”

Thursday’s highlights included NMU’s 800 free relay seventh place finish and Lindsay Stedman’s performance in the mile. She swam 18:45.79; good for 13th place.

On Friday, Gaby Alzaga was the lone ‘Cat to take home a first place when she won the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 58.20. Alzaga also had her best time in the 200 yard freestyle. Gena Haas finished 16th in the 200 fly.

Olga Budiansky made it to the finals in the 100 breaststroke, finishing sixth. Stedman was eighth in the 400 IM and the 400 medley relay team finished 4th. Kelli Vander Baan had another great performance on the three meter board finishing third. Up and coming freshman, Breanne Bajo squeezed into the finals and finished eighth in the three meter dive event.

“Lauren Cockels was instrumental in the weekend; scoring in the 50 free, swimming amazing in our relays and clocking her best times in almost everything she swam.”

NMU has another month off to prepare for its next meet in Cocoa Beach, Fla. The ‘Cats swim at the Cocoa Beach Invite on Jan. 7.
