Michigan Tech Wins Superior Showcase

SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. – Michigan Tech scored three goals in the first period in a 6-2 win over Lake Superior State to win the Superior Showcase Saturday (Oct. 9). Tech (2-0-0) finished 1-for-2 on the man-advantage and held the Lakers (0-1-1) scoreless on their only
powerplay of the night.

“This is a great way to start the year after a tough year last season with such an injury depleted lineup,” said head coach Jamie Russell. “This sweep on the road will go a long way toward being a confident team. We are getting great leadership from our senior class and our freshman have demonstrated terrific maturity. We have a long way to go on this
journey but our effort and mental strength was outstanding.”

Hard work by the Huskies led to the first career goal for Patrick McCadden at 6:30. He scored an unassisted goal from a low angle on Laker freshman Kevine Kapalka who was making his first career start.

Less than one minute later LSSU answered with a goal of its own with an offensive flurry that ended with a goal by sophomore Zach Trotman at 7:20.

Sophomore Steven Seigo factored into the second and third goals for the Huskies. He recorded an assist after freshman Milos Gordic tipped a shot by senior Bennett Royer on the powerplay. Seigo followed up with his own goal at 16:37.

Junior Brett Olson scored his first goal of the season compliments of a great individual effort. He created a turnover in the slot and then fired a slapshot past Kapalka at 10:15 of the second period.

Senior Matt Cowie gave the Lakers life scoring an even strength goal at 8:14.

LSSU started playing with an empty net for extended periods of time with eight minutes remaining.

Freshman Jacob Johnstone netted his first career goal for the Huskies at 9:26 with Kapalka in net and Gordic added an empty goal with one minute remaining.

Sophomore Kevin Genoe made 34 saves in his first win of the season for Tech.

Kapalka finished with 19 saves in the Laker loss.

Tech will host Northern Michigan for the only time this season Tuesday (Oct. 12).
