NMU Athletes of March

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at Northern Michigan University announces the Male and Female Athletes of the Month for March. Erik Gustafsson was named the Male Athlete of the Month while Laura DeWitt was selected the Female Athlete of the Month.

Gustafsson helped lead the NMU hockey team to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Championship Game and NCAA Tournament during the month. He recorded four assists during March in six games.

Two of his assists were recorded in the 5-1 win over Alaska in the second game of the CCHA Playoff series. Gustafsson assisted on Greger Hanson’s game-winning overtime goal against Ferris State in the CCHA semifinals for the 5-4 win. He also was named the CCHA Best Offensive Defenseman and to the CCHA All-Conference First Team during March.

DeWitt placed eighth in the 5K classic race (17:19.4) at the NCAA Skiing Championships which garnered her all-America status in the event. She also competed in the 15K freestyle race at the NCAA event as she just missed another all-America finish as she was 12th in the event (43:26.2).

The top 10 finishers in the event earned all-America honors. As a team the ‘Cats finished in 14th place at the NCAA Skiing Championships. DeWitt was also named the Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) Female Athlete of the Year.
