Wildfire Near Houghton County Airport

A fire near the Houghton County Airport leads to a DNRE reminder about burning outdoor debris.

The fire started at about 1 this afternoon in Franklin Township, at the Goodwill store near the airport.

The blaze involved wooden pallets and it caught some grass nearby on fire as well.

With that in mind, the DNRE is trying to remind people that open debris burning is prohibited in the U.P. and no burn permits are being issued.

It’s because of the high fire danger.

With the lack of snow on the ground, exposed dead grass and other vegetation can light up easily.

There have been more than 50 wildfires reported in the U.P. in March.

The DNRE says property owners burning debris caused more than half of them.
