Ishpeming Considers Closing Phelps School

School districts all over are trying to cut costs any way they can.

Ishpeming is looking at closing one of its schools to help achieve that.

It’s C.L. Phelps Middle School.

The district is considering a bond issue to pay for an expansion of Birchview Elementary.

The district is waiting for the state Treasury Department to give an OK.

The extra space would allow the district to send preschoolers through 6th-graders to Birchview.

7th and 8th-graders would be in the Central School portion of Ishpeming High School.

Phelps would close.

Even with the Treasury’s OK, the bond issue would still need to go to voters.

The soonest that could happen would be at the May 4th election.
