Car Thief Caught After Nearly Hitting Police Truck

A teenage girl without a driver’s license steals a car and gets caught when she nearly hits a police truck.

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Department says it happened at about 10:30 yesterday morning.

They say Sgt. Errikk Decker pulled over a car that was being driven recklessly on its way out of the parking lot of the Marquette Wal-Mart store.

Sgt. Decker says the driver nearly his the marked truck that he was driving.

The unlicensed driver pulled out of the parking lot without the owner knowing about it.

Benjamin Hunter of Marquette left his keys in the car while he ran inside the store for a few minutes.

And he reported his car missing while Sgt. Decker was pulling it over.

He got his car back with no damage.

Police say the suspected thief is a 16-year-old girl from Baraga.

She’s been taken to the Marquette County Youth Home.

They’ll also ask Probate Court to authorize criminal charges against her.
