No More Police in Breitung Township

Starting New Year’s Day, a Dickinson County community won’t have direct police protection anymore.

Breitung Township has told the Sheriff’s Department it doesn’t want to renew their law enforcement services contract.

That means the township’s only road patrol officer will be out of a job.

The township had 2 full-time sheriff’s deputies as recently as last year.

But in November 2008, the township board voted to eliminate the job of 1 of them.

There’s no word yet from the township on the reason for this year’s cut or how much money would be saved.

However, last year’s cut was done entirely as a cost-reduction move.

Breitung Township saved $64,000 by making that one.
