Delta County’s largest employer is shut down again.
The NewPage paper mill in Escanaba has been idle since Sunday, and the equipment is being checked out.
All 3 paper-makimg machines and other items are down for maintenance.
NewPage has said it would be taking some downtime in the 4th quarter of the year because of continued weak demand for coated paper.
They timed the maintenance work to coincide with that.
Employees who aren’t involved in the work are taking vacation time, unpaid time off or unemployment.
The company says everything should be back up and running next Monday.
Weak market demand also shut the mill down for 11 days back in April.
