15 to 30 Years in Ontonagon Assault

An Ontonagon man is heading to state prison until at least 2024 for assault with intent to commit murder.

56-year-old Paul Gauthier has been sentenced to 15 to 30 years behind bars.

He’s also being banished from Ontonagon County once he’s released.

Last July, he attacked 29-year-old Tonia Corey.

The 2 of them lived together at the time.

County sheriff’s deputies initially arrested Gauthier for domestic assault.

But they later upped the charge.

There was no weapon involved.

But even so, Corey suffered blunt force trauma and was also strangled.

Last month, a jury only needed 3 hours of deliberation to convict Gauthier.

He could have received any sentence up to life in prison.
