Ontonagon Assault Conviction

An Ontonagon man is convicted of assault with intent to murder.

55-year-old Paul Gauthier is now waiting for his sentence.

Last July, he attacked 29-year-old Tonia Corey.

The 2 of them lived together at the time.

County sheriff’s deputies initially arrested Gauthier for domestic assault.

But they upped the charge after investigating further.

Police said at the time of the incident that there was no weapon involved.

Even so, a medical expert testified that not only did Corey suffer blunt force trauma, she was also strangled.

The jury only needed 3 hours of deliberation to find Gauthier guilty.

He could spend the rest of his life in prison.
