Humbold Area Residents Speak Out on Re-Opening Mill

Western Marquette County residents share their opinions on the proposed re-opening of the former Humboldt Mill by Kennecott Minerals.

It was a full house this afternoon, with people from all over the area coming by to learn more about the re-opening plans from the Michigan DEQ.

They also got to speak their minds during a public hearing.

Most people on hand, many of whom were union members, say the mill would benefit the area.

We at UGN News did find some people at the hearing opposed to the idea, worried about the environmental effects the mill would bring.

But none of them wanted to speak with us on camera.

The DEQ will review the comments that are made and they’ll recommend a decision in mid-April.

That’ll be followed by another hearing.

You can still have any questions answered tonight by the DEQ at the Humboldt Township Hall until 9:30.

We will be there for the nighttime session as well to speak with DEQ officials.

You’ll be able to hear more about that on our Late News at 11, and on the UGN News at 10 on CW 5.
