NMU Readying for Possible Cuts

Another aspect of the possible budget cuts is higher education.

NMU is trying to get ready for a worst-case scenario, up to $10 million in cuts.

NMU’s general fund balance for this year was about $100 million.

Gavin Leach is NMU’s vice president in charge of finance and administration.

He asked department heads to come up with a budget plan that involves cuts.

One possibility he asked them to prepare for was a 6% budget cut.

The other was a 10% cut.

School officials will have a better idea how the governor plans to make up for the expected $1.4 billion budget shortfall for next year in her address tomorrow.

Michigan Tech and other universities in Michigan’s Public 15 are making similar preparations.
