State of Emergency from Water Main Break

Most people in Ironwood are still either without water tonight or with very low water pressure.

That’s led Gogebic County to declare a state of emergency.

A huge water main break a little after 9 Central time last night on Lake Street, south of US-2, led to that.

City personnel have been on the scene since then.

There’s no word yet on when regular water service will be restored.

The county has set up an emergency operations center at Ironwood Public Safety headquarters.

The city’s water system is also at critically low levels.

City officials are strongly urging everyone to conserve what water does come through the taps, and to boil that water for 5 minutes before using it.

That advisory will remain in effect until at least Monday.

Fresh drinking water is available at the Public Safety Department.

Everyone who comes by for it is being asked to bring a container.

Anyone homebound can call Public Safety for a water delivery.

Public restrooms are available both at the department and the Ironwood Memorial Building.

The Red Cross is providing bottled water to some nursing homes and public housing residents.
