Ishpeming Man Behind Bars Longer Than Expected

An Ishpeming man who pleaded guilty to stabbing and beating a young woman will do more time than his plea agreement called for.

21-year-old Andrew Tippett will serve 2 to 10 years in prison for assault with intent to commit murder.

But he’s been given credit for the 11 months he’s spent in jail.

Tippett will also pay restitution.

The charges came from the beating and stabbing of an Ishpeming 18-year-old last February.

The knife struck bone in the young woman’s back.

But it didn’t penetrate too deeply because it broke.

Prosecutors said at the time that if it weren’t for that, she probably would have died.

Tippett’s defense attorney said during the case that his client was intoxicated at the time and had also been diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome.
